I can see the interface, and I can assure you it is sweet looking (but the port doesn’t open)
I’ve had the same experience as you describe on a laptop machine with multiple versions, but was able to launch the program on a “new” machine. New meaning a machine that hasn’t run Arduino or Makelangelo software before (Win 7)
Thanks for keeping at it. We each take incremental steps to make Open Source a bit better.

Edit: added one missing L to “marginally”

The picture after “Connect the servo extension table to the control shield. Use this picture for reference”
Shows it in the second row of pins. (Mine needed to be in first row.)

    WWWWOOOOOWWWW
The interface looks so fantastic, and has a cool shadow of the hanging pulleys.
    On a new machine-
I have the updated firmware installed. Using Arduino 1.6.5
Makelangelo 7.2.2 opens beautifully. (Hence my enthusiastic remarks)
The Com Port hangs- the log says the port is opening but there is no result, and no hello world message.
Edit- I think I renamed the Makelangelo file with a .jar extension which helped it to open.

Just a heads up that a new release of Arduino came out today 1.6.6
It doesn’t play nicely with the hard work put into the compatibility of 1.6.5 Compiling issues with firmware_ams ino file

    Excellent suggestion.
Switching connections was the answer! Thank you.
It took some tenacity since the pins will go in with either orientation. This is probably a detail worth noting in the instruction page. (For newbies, the extension cord connection takes quite a bit of force as well.)

I’m starting to try running with Makelangelo version 7.1.0
It appears that all the styles of drawing available require the pen up/down feature to work (I liked that all one long line.)
My servo doesn’t move beyond a little click when it is plugged in.
The pen up and pen down commands don’t do anything. (The driving around is working great.)
I thought it might have been the extender wire, but there is no result with the servo plugged in directly. Any ideas?

May I ask which version of the Makelangelo code you are running?

The second update of the day resolved the compiling error of the firmware_ams ino file. (Yipee!)

Makelangelo software still doesn’t open. No picture or language preference. Jar file doesn’t open it either. Error code begins with

Will try on my Win 8 machine and update
Update- Similar results This time, the picture and language preferences do not open.

This is AWESOME progress. I can only guess how much time this took, and is way out of my current programming level.

My Makelangelo didn’t open as expected, but I think this is the end of this thread in my case, and I’ll post at the other thread.
Hope that it works for all users! Makelangelo power on!

I tried a clean install this morning with what looks like a new version (one hour ago at github)
Arduino still has compiling error of firmware_ams ino
Picture and language preference window open. Then goes blank.

Borrowed my friends MacBook Pro again Downloaded fresh files (Nov 1 30 mins after latest update)

The Arduino file firmware_ams ino has an error compling. It’s the same one as on my PC (void AF_Stepper: :onestep(uint8_t)

Here are some screen shots of the difficulties overcome- I think these are related to Norton protection.

Start OS X The Terminal command didn’t complete- error
The function CGCodntextErase is obsolete and will be removed in an upcoming update. Unfortunately this application or a Library it uses is using this obsolete function, and is therby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance.

The Makelangelo Jar file will make the picture appear, the language preference start,
The Arduino will connect- Hello World!

Not sure if this is the new firmware, or the Makelangelo software- but Arduino doesn’t compile.

I downloaded the newest firmware update (10/31) just 2 hours old. 🙂

Put the 2 folders in C:UsersXXXXXXXXDocumentsArduinolibraries
    1 Adafruit_MotorShield-with Adafruit_MotorShield.cpp and Adafruit_MotorShield.h in it and
    2 AFMotorDrawbot-with AFMotorDrawbot.cpp and AFMotorDrawbot.h in it

The newest code #include is included in the file Firmware_AMS Arduino sketch.

It doesn’t compile due to AFMotor.h – No such file or directory. Screenshot:

The Read me says: Makelangelo v7 (The read me in the same folder as the start windows command)
I assume it is version 7.1.1 as it came from GitHub

I followed the download link, and have a folder of firmware.

It wasn’t clear to me how to install it. What I tried was to replace the firmware_ams and firmware_rumba folders.

The result was the same as before. The port opens but that’s the last message (No “Hello World” on log tab)
It is interesting that there is no “picture” of the Makelangelo before choosing a language.
Did I guess right? What next?

    Motor Party Info- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kZj3DPjsQk
One of the Arduino examples in the Ada Fruit collection. It can be used to test the connections of the Motor Shield.

One solved issue?- had extracted the Makelangelo files into the Program Files (x86) Due to my education establishment settings, the program folder did not permit the making of the log file. Moved to documents folder.

I modified the start.bat file, and was able to get the message:
Libpng warning:iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile
    Oct 26, 2015 9:00 PM java.util.prefs.WindowsPrefereces
WARNING: Could not open/create prefs root node SoftwareJavaSoftPrefs at root ______ Windows RegCreateKeyEx(…) returned error code 5
    Exception in thread “AWT-EventQuere-0” java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: _____ gluegen-rt.dll Can’t load AMD 64-bit .dll on a IA 32-bit platform.
Then a lot of at java.awt… (Unknown Source) messages.

Another issue I may have stumbled onto is not knowing how to install the firmware. I switched out the old folders for the new ones from Git Hub. Didn’t seem to make a difference. Hope the previous messages can help.

Aruduino Test- Blink worked well Motor Party would not compile.
Perhaps I have some of the pieces mixed up?

    Arduino: 1.6.5 (Windows 7), Board: “Arduino/Genuino Uno”

MotorParty.pde:5:21: fatal error: AFMotor.h: No such file or directory
    compilation terminated.
    Error compiling.

This report would have more information with
    “Show verbose output during compilation”
    enabled in File > Preferences.

New message after reinstalling from the link:
(Java runtime is 1.7 Same as before)
java.lang.NullPointerException (This message will only appeared the first time)

It took me a while to remind myself of some ancient command prompt navigation. At the end the result of using the command prompt is the same as double clicking on the jar file. The picture shows briefly, choose a language, Interface shows up, Pick a Com Port, No result. The log shows the port opening, but it doesn’t connect or show “Hello World” and just hangs here.

This leaves me confused about a next step and doubting about the way I installed it. I extracted the files to a folder in my documents. Might it be better to put it somewhere else? Do Arduino files and Makelangelo files need to be in the same folder?

I’m excited to try the new changes. One minor change I did noticed over the weekend is that the word “menu” now appears before all of the menu commands (which I don’t think was there before). Regards.

I like the idea of logos from Harry Potter (I am still a librarian)!

I don’t think a speed changing button would add or subtract anything from the experience overall. There was a time when a slower speed might have improved the “wobbles” of my pictures, but I think I’ve worked these out over time.

Your support so far is amazing! I know that a robot arm is in my future because of it.

One other idea about paper- I recently saw whole sheet post its for laptops. It would be cool to have a bunch of these on a sheet, to draw a picture, then share the picture with the audience participants possibly asking them to re-assemble the picture again at another location. I think it was expensive, but probably not prohibitive.
