Converting Images with GIMP?

My students are eager to convert pictures to use which have a lot of grayscale (like of themselves).
I’m hoping readers might be able to point us towards tutorials using free tools wlhich prepare the image for the Makelangelo/Drawbot.
I think the “Threshold” command in GIMP might be the way to go.You are very correct. Here’s a video I found of someone using the curve editor to adjust the threshold in GIMP.
